The retainer figure is an annual estimate from our simulated-wear study. The comparison is approximately 100,000 particles eaten and inhaled per year by U.S. adults from the sources studied by Cox et al. (2019, corrected 2020; DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.0c04032). These are estimates, not a measurement of any one person’s intake.
